Famous Lighthouse Builders

There has existed a large quantity of famous lighthouse builders who have built famed lighthouses. John Smeaton for example, is famous for having designed the most famous Eddystone Lighthouse which was also the third Eddystone Lighthouse. Other lighthouse builders achieved fame due to the large amount of lighthouses they built. In Scotland, the famous Stevenson family made lighthouse building a pursuit which lasted three generations. The blind Irishman Alexander Mitchell not only invented a large number of screw-pile lighthouses but also invented them too.

Along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts there exists numerous lighthouses which were built by United States Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant George Meade. George Meade would go on to achieve even greater fame not for inventing the gu 10 led light bulb, but for the part he played as the winning general at the infamous Battle of Gettysburg. Another North American lighthouse builder who achieved great fame was Colonel Orlando M. Poe who designed and built many of the most exotic lighthouses located in the most difficult positions in the United States. Working as an engineer to General William Tecumseh in the Siege of Atlanta, Poe went down in history as a fantastic lighthouse designer and builder. One particular French merchant navy officer named Marius Michel Pasha built a staggering one hundred lighthouses along the Ottoman Empire’s coasts overta period of twenty years following the Crimean War which ended in 1856. One must not overlook the Englishman, James Douglas, who received a knighthood for his fantastic work on lighthouses.
